Dr. Sam Sussman, Ph. D.

▪ ▪ ▪ Between 1972 and 1997, Dr. Sussman served as Director of Social Services / Social Work for three major Psychiatric Hospitals in Ontario (Whitby, London and St. Thomas). Dr. Sussman has also been affiliated with the University of Western Ontario since 1983 as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Sussman has authored/edited books on the history of Psychiatry and has contributed to various peer-reviewed journals. A popular public speaker, Dr. Sussman has made presentations at meetings of numerous professional associations including the International Association of Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Services, the Ontario Association of Social Workers, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Canadian Psychiatric Association and the Ontario Psychiatric Association. Dr. Sussman is an active volunteer, serving both locally and globally. He has been on the Board of Directors for many organizations including the Richmond Fellowship International, the Alumni Association of the University of Loughborough (U.K.), the University of Western Ontario Alumni Association, the Senate of the University of Western Ontario, the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario, the Schizophrenia Association of Canada, Homes Unlimited, the United Way of London, and the London Intercommunity Health Centre. From 1999-2001 Dr. Sussman was involved in the Diplomatic Corps of a developing African nation. In 1995 Dr. Sussman founded the S. Sussman - J. Deadman Archival Centre at London Psychiatric Hospital. The archive served as a source of information for scholars and offered public lectures to community groups, and provided an international perspective on the history of psychiatry. Dr. Sussman holds a BA degree from Concordia University, an MSW from the University of Manitoba, a Diploma in Public Administration from the University of Western Ontario, and a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from Loughborough University (U.K.). Dr. Sussman was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland in 2000. ▪ ▪ ▪ |
